The Essex League champions snatched a remarkable two-wicket win against 1995 champions Malden Wanderers in the 50-over event which features the London area's top 122 teams.

Wanstead captain Hinton already had plenty to smile about as his partner Selina had given birth to daughter Yasmin last week.

And it became a double celebration after the new father's rapid innings of 70 gave his side a memorable victory. After bowling Malden out for 164, Wanstead lost three wickets in Nick Procter's first over and were 11 for five when Hinton joined vice-captain Dave Richardson at the crease.

Hinton blasted five sixes as he raced to 50 off 21 balls and his eventual tally of 70 helped his side reach 103 for seven.

Scott Maddin (33 not out) and Rob Mckay (16 not out) enjoyed an unbroken ninth-wicket stand of 48, to steer Wanstead home with 3.5 overs and two wickets to spare and keep their sights on the 9 September final at The Oval.

Eleven of the 32 scheduled second-round ties were rained off and have been rescheduled for Sunday.
