Hodgson hits back after cup humbling

No regrets: Fulham's Roy Hodgson

Roy Hodgson launched a staunch defence of his decision to make eight changes for last night's Carling Cup humiliation at Burnley.

The Fulham manager's strategy will inevitably come under scrutiny after the Cottagers hopes of progressing to the last 16 came to an abrupt halt.

A goal from teenage striker Jay Rodriguez, his first for the Championship side, two minutes from the end settled the tie when extra-time was looming.

But Hodgson remained unrepentant despite opting for a line-up that included only three players — Andy Johnson, Paul Konchesky and Zoltan Gera — who started the Premier League defeat at Blackburn three days earlier.

And while he claimed his makeshift side did enough to extend their interest in the competition, he made it clear his eyes were firmly locked on Saturday's visit of West Ham United to Craven Cottage.

"I've no regrets about putting in eight new players," Hodgson said.

"The Premier League is our priority and some of my players have been struggling with niggling injuries recently.

"We looked on for extra-time but then we conceded so close to the final whistle. But credit must go to Burnley because they did very well and gave a fighting performance."

Five of Hodgson's side were making their first start of the season, including Swiss keeper Pascal Zuberbuhler who impressed on his debut following his move from Neuchatel Xamax last month.

The manager added: "I thought we matched them in most areas of the field and overall I have to say I am pleased with the way my team performed on the night."

The Championship side's defences proved too strong for Andy Johnson who again failed to open his Fulham account on his third appearance for the club.

The striker is battling to return to full fitness, but his recovery would have been boosted had he made more of a first-half chance set up by Seol Ki-Hyeon only to scuff his shot straight at Burnley keeper Brian Jensen.
