Hoggard leads England fightback

Matthew Hoggard claimed three wickets for 11 runs as England took control of their three-day tour match against a Bangladesh President's XI today.

Replying to England's disappointing 253, the hosts struggled to 46 for six at the close on day two, with Hoggard sending back openers Hannan Sarkar and Nafees Iqbal in one over before removing Ashiqur Rahman for a duck.

Hoggard, who missed the home series against South Africa in the summer due to injury, claimed he felt 95 per cent fit. "I got some swing and enjoyed the bowling," he said.

Seamer Martin Saggers took two wickets and paceman Steve Harmison added another to overshadow the success enjoyed by the local bowlers earlier in the day.

Left-arm spinner Enamul Haque Junior picked up four wickets and Anwar Hossain and Gazi Alamgir two apiece as England suffered a humiliating collapse.

Aside from Marcus Trescothick's 90, England's batting will be a cause for concern.

Resuming on 106 for one, the tourists progressed comfortably to 191 for two at lunch. But Trescothick fell to the first ball after the interval, ending an innings which included four sixes and seven other boundaries. His exit prompted the loss of four wickets in 17 balls, without a run being added. At just 18, Enamul claimed two wickets in five deliveries.

The inexperienced lower order prevented a complete capitulation with wicketkeeper Chris Read and Gareth Batty forging a useful 55-run seventh wicket stand, but they lost their last three wickets after tea for only nine runs.

Even allowing for their lack of preparation, it was a disappointing display from the tourists - with the opening Test at the same ground beginning on 21 October.
