Hull hooker Danny Houghton has signed a new contract that will keep him at the KC Stadium until the end of 2014 but team-mate Craig Fitzgibbon has almost certainly played his final game for the club.

The 34-year-old Fitzgibbon, who is in his second season with Hull, broke his ankle during Saturday's 50-18 win over Castleford, scans have confirmed.

The veteran forward is out of contract at the end of the season and is expected to announce his retirement, bringing to an end a distinguished career that saw him make in excess of 250 appearances in the NRL and earn 19 caps with Australia.

Fitzgibbon took over the captaincy this season from Sean Long but has been in and out of the side due to injury.

The 22-year-old Houghton, meanwhile, has signed a two-year extension to his current contract.

"I am really thrilled and it has come as a bit of a surprise really," he said.

"I am really happy with the way I am playing and happy at Hull FC, they are my club and I wouldn't want to be playing anywhere else so it was an easy decision to make."

Houghton has started all 29 of his club's matches so far this year following the departure of Shaun Berrigan and has been called into the England Knights squad.
