Howarth the hero in Cup upset

14 April 2012

Conference side Accrington Stanley reached the FA Cup third round for the first time in 42 years after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Second Division Bournemouth.

Paul Howarth was the Accrington hero after netting the crucial spot-kick after the second round replay finished 0-0 after extra time.

Boss John Coleman, a part-time teacher at a local primary school, said: "It was extremely nerve-racking. We told our players to stand up and be counted for the shoot-out and had nine people volunteer.

People were upset that they didn't get picked. That's good - better than having to poke them in the eye to do it.

"It has been a really tough battle and it's sad somebody had to lose."

The Lancashire side will be at home to Colchester in the third round on 3 January.
