Hoy through at the second attempt

Sir Chris Hoy required a second chance to progress to the quarter-finals of the men's sprint at the Track Cycling World Championships in Copenhagen.

Hoy was forced into the repechage of the competition after being caught napping in his second-round clash by Germany's Robert Forstemann but the four-time Olympic champion progressed at the second time of asking, winning the three-man repechage in a photo finish.

He will now meet defending champion Gregory Bauge of France in the best-of-three quarter-finals.

Matt Crampton also won his repechage to qualify for the last eight, while Jason Kenny made more straightforward progress than his team-mates, winning his opening two contests comfortably.

Hoy won Britain's only gold of the championships so far with victory in the men's keirin on Thursday and progressed to the first knockout round in 9.913 seconds, behind Bauge's 9.896secs.

He beat Poland's Damian Zielinski with ease before being caught off guard in the second round.

The gladiatorial sprint duels usually feature cat and mouse games in the first two of the three-lap contests, but 2008 world and Olympic champion Hoy was stunned by the tactics employed by Forstemann.

The German had apparent issues with his bike and officials requested it be adjusted, leaving Hoy to wait for almost four minutes.

When the whistle finally went, Forstemann was off, sprinting the entire three laps (750metres) and leaving Hoy to play catch up.

The Briton was slow starting on a big gear but responded, only to be beaten in a photo finish.
