Hughes' pride as Rovers top group

12 April 2012

Mark Hughes spoke of his pride after Blackburn secured top spot in Group E thanks to a dramatic late UEFA Cup victory against Nancy.

Lucas Neill's first goal of the season two minutes into stoppage time rocked the French side. The 1-0 win means Blackburn will now face one of the third-placed teams when the draw for the knockout stages is made on Friday.

Hughes said: "I am proud of what we have done in the competition to top the group. It is a good achievement and something we aspired to at the beginning of the season. Now we have to put it to one side and concentrate on the Premier League."

It was a sweet moment for Neill, who came under fire from a section of the support at the weekend in the home defeat by Newcastle.

He has been widely tipped to join Liverpool in the transfer window, and that speculation has upset the fans.

Neill celebrated his goal by cupping his hand to his ear.

Blackburn boss Hughes said: "He was a little bit frustrated, because maybe he heard a few comments from the crowd.

"There will always be certain individuals who will make their feelings known.

"The reason Lucas has the captain's armband is because I gave it to him a number of weeks ago.

"He has not done anything to make take it off him. He came out in this game with the right attitude and kept going right until the end. It was a great finish, and he created the goal by himself."
