Hull hand captaincy to Long

Former St Helens and Great Britain scrum-half Sean Long was confirmed on Monday as the surprise choice to captain Hull in 2010.

The controversial 33-year-old takes over the armband from back-row forward Lee Radford, who has held the role for the last three years and becomes club captain.

Long, who ended a 12-year association with St Helens by signing a two-year deal with Hull, got the vote ahead of Radford and fellow newcomer Craig Fitzgibbon.

"We were probably spoilt for choice this time around," said Hull coach Richard Agar, whose side finished a disappointing 12th in Super League XIV. "We've got a pretty strong leadership group.

"In the two months we've been in so far, it's been pretty obvious which guys were steering the ship.

"Sean is one of the most successful and influential players of his generation. He knows the English game inside out and he's very much an on-field general for us.

"From the day he walked into the joint, he's not only commanded respect but he's been steadily imparting his knowledge with the other players. It's a fairly logical choice."

Long told a press conference at the KC Stadium: "I was really chuffed when Richard asked me to be captain. When he asked me I didn't have to think long about it, it was an automatic yes.

"My job doesn't really change. I'll still direct the lads around the field whether I'm captain or not.

"It's an added pressure which I'm looking forward to. It's an honour."
