I had a point to prove and I did it, says Butt as he extends Newcastle contract

Newcastle midfielder Nicky Butt has set his sights on helping to bring a long-awaited trophy to Tyneside, after signing a new one-year contract.

The 32-year-old, whose existing deal was due to expire at the end of the current campaign, today put pen to paper on a 12-month extension with the option of a further year.

Butt, who joined the Magpies in a £2.5million move from Manchester United in the summer of 2004, is delighted to have sealed his future.

He told his club's official website, www.nufc.co.uk: "I only had six months left at the club and I was wanting to get it sorted out, as was the club, and it is nice to get it sorted and just crack on with football now.

"It gives me 18 months from now. The contract is something I am happy with, and I hope we can go forward with the team and the squad we have got and start challenging for things.

"It's potentially a massive club. We should be winning things. We have got a great fan base and a great stadium and some great players - it is just a case of tying it all together and kicking on.

"They have been trying to do that for a long time at this club, I know that. But we have got potential here, and I want to be part of that for the future."

Butt looked to be heading out of St James' Park, after being sent out on a season's loan to Birmingham by then manager Graeme Souness.

But Souness' successor Glenn Roeder gave him a second chance. He has never looked back since, and is now a key member of Sam Allardyce's side.

Butt said: "I had a point to prove because it did not go too well in the first year.

"But it is all going well at the minute, and I am happy."
