Improving Misterah can foil her rivals

Two fillies have long dominated betting for Sunday's Sagitta 1,000 Guineas - last year's top European juvenile of her sex, Queen's Logic, and Gossamer, full sister to brilliant miler Barathea.

Queen's Logic wouldn't need to improve on last year's form to win this fillies' classic. She promises to stay this trip and has the professional attitude required. She will improve for her Fred Darling Stakes primer, but failed to impress enough for a 13-8 shot.

At Newbury that day, she wasn't right in her coat but quickened when asked to go on over three furlongs out. However, her advantage was cut down rapidly by Roundtree, who was crucially blocked for a run. Fourth-placed Lady Dominatrix has at least franked the form at Ascot two days ago.

Luca Cumani has bypassed Guineas trials with Gossamer, who attempts to go one better than her full-brother managed in the 1993 2,000 Guineas against Zafonic. She could be the tougher opponent of the pair but this will be the fastest ground she has encountered and, although she won the Prestige on a sound surface, there is a slight doubt whether she will be able to reproduce her heavy-ground dominance of the Fillies' Mile here.

Maryinsky, runner-up to Gossamer at Ascot that day, caught the eye but - like fast-finishing Nell Gwyn fourth Alasha and forgotten challenger, Group One-winning Sulk - she may be better over the Oaks trip.This race is so often won by the most forward filly. Although Misterah benefitted from kicking off the slow pace set by Massarra in the Nell Gwyn, she is open to further improvement over a fast-run mile.
