India have won the Test series against New Zealand with an innings-and-198-run victory in the final game at Nagpur.

The tourists began the day on 24 for one, needing 349 more runs to make India bat again, but they lost seven cheap wickets in the opening session to crumble to 124 for eight, while Ishant Sharma wrapped up the tail soon after lunch to secure the win.

After two drawn Tests, the teams entered the final match in the series with all to play for, and India ripped out New Zealand for 193 in their first innings before racking up 566 for eight in reply.

That piled pressure on the Black Caps, and when Tim McIntosh fell cheaply before the close of play on Monday the omens were not good.

Brendon McCullum was pinned lbw by Pragyan Ojha for 25 on Tuesday morning, with the score on 38.

And without any addition to the total New Zealand lost their third second-innings wicket when Martin Guptill fell in the same manner to the same bowler, for a first-ball duck at the start of Ojha's next over.

Harbhajan Singh rooted out Gareth Hopkins (8) and Ross Taylor (29) before Kane Williamson (8) was bowled by Sharma to leave New Zealand on 110 for six.

Jesse Ryder succumbed for 22 to the off-spin of Suresh Raina, and Raina then struck again to remove New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori for 13.

And the final blows were dealt a few overs after lunch, with Sharma - who began a fresh spell replacing Ojha - bowling out the last two batsmen in back-to-back deliveries, Tim Southee (31) and Chris Martin (nought).
