India take control

12 April 2012

India took a hold of the opening day of the Second Test as Australia lost four wickets in the afternoon session to reach tea at 214 for six.

RP Singh and spinner Harbhajan Singh had combined to lethal effect as they tore through Australia's middle batting order.

At the break, Andrew Symonds was unbeaten on 39 alongside Brad Hogg, who was 48 not out with the hosts' hopes of a 16th consecutive Test victory in some doubt.

After resuming at 95 for two after lunch, Australia lost four wickets in 31 balls to move onto an alarming 134 for six.

Ricky Ponting was out lbw after hitting 55 runs before Michael Hussey went for 41 soon after when he hit towards Sachin Tendulkar at first slip from a RP Singh delivery.

Michael Clarke was out lbw for one run before Adam Gilchrist edged to Tendulkar off RP Singh.

Earlier, India had made the ideal start by quickly taking the wickets of openers Phil Jaques and Matthew Hayden.

After winning the toss Australia elected to bat first and Jaques was first to go for a duck in the third over when he edged a catch to Mahendra Singh Dhoni from a RP Singh delivery.

Hayden was joined by captain Ricky Ponting before the former was caught by Sachin Tendulkar at first slip for 13.
