India tour 'will go ahead'

13 April 2012

England's tour to India later this year will still go ahead despite Australia's decision today to cancel their rugby league Ashes tour to Britain.

The Kangaroos' concern about players' safety in the light of military strikes in Afghanistan had no bearing on the future of the tour to the sub-continent said Tim Lamb, chief executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Lamb was adamant that, at the current time, the ECB would not be re-thinking their plans for the winter Test series.

"We are monitoring the situation on a day-to-day basis but we don't know what it is going to be like in the next five weeks," he said.

"What the Australians decide to do is up to them. Australia's decision not to tour is, as far as we are concerned, unrelated to our situation."

The squad, many of whom are currently in Zimbabwe for a series of one-day internationals, is due to depart for India next month.

Lamb said that he would discuss the situation with the president of the Indian Cricket Board at a meeting of the International Cricket Council scheduled to be held in Malaysia next week.

"We are obviously in touch with our High Commission in India and will take specific advice, as we always do," he added.

"I don't want people to think we are blindly going without taking advice. We have never knowingly sent our players to parts of the world where their safety was at risk.

"At the moment there is no travel advice the Foreign and Commonwealth Office is currently issuing which advises people not to travel.

"If we need to consider any changes we will do in the light of events that may occur up to the date of our departure in the middle of next month."
