Inzamam will keep captaincy

12 April 2012

Inzamam-ul-Haq looks certain to retain the Pakistan captaincy despite receiving another disciplinary ban for his role in the controversial end to last month's final Test at the Oval.

The 36-year-old batsman was given a four-match one-day international ban for his role in Pakistan's protest after umpires Billy Doctrove and Darrell Hair awarded England five penalty runs for ball-tampering on the fourth day. Although he was also cleared of ball-tampering after the two-day hearing, it was still his fifth brush with authority in the last 17 months.

However, Shaharyar Khan, chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, said: "Inzamam is our captain. He will not play in four matches, but it will not affect his captaincy."

Shaharyar claimed Inzamam's deeply-felt sense of moral justice prompted Pakistan's decision to stage a protest at the ball-tampering allegations immediately after tea and led to a Test being forfeited for the first time in cricket history.

He believes Inzamam regarded the accusation as a slur against his side and his country.

"I am very satisfied with Inzamam," added Khan.

"He is a person who feels deeply about any accusations of cheating or malpractice.

"He's a very moral man, a very religious man - and that's why he has admitted that with hindsight, he should not have acted in the manner which he did."
