Iraq find little consolation

The reality of life in a war-torn country added a grim perspective to Iraq's 3-1 semi-final defeat against Paraguay in the Olympic football competition.

While the progress of the medal outsiders to the last four was acclaimed as a sporting miracle, coach Adnan Hamad insisted: "Our situation does not allow us to enjoy the grandeur of our achievements.

"You cannot talk about peace symbolism, since there is still war in Iraq and the military is everywhere in the country."

Iraq play Italy for the bronze medal on Friday, while Paraguay will face Argentina for the gold on Saturday.
