Iraq get lift with quarter-final bid

Iraq have made an astonishing run to the quarter-finals of the men's Olympic football tournament after a 2-0 victory over Costa Rica.

Second-half goals from Hawar Mohammed and substitute Mahdi Karim in Athens gave the war-weary country a perfect six points from two games in Group D.

Iraq, who upset Portugal 4-2 in their opening game, have endured extreme hardship to qualify for the Olympics.

Mohammed said: "Our success is so important for our people and our country because we are facing so many difficulties."
