Ivar no idea where winner went

12 April 2012

Ivar Ingimarsson did not even see the goal he scored on Monday night to earn newly-promoted Reading their second Premiership win - a 1-0 success over Manchester City at the Madejski Stadium.

The Icelandic centre-back was laid out in an aerial clash with City's Sylvain Distin as they both went for Bobby Convey's free-kick in the 24th minute. Ingimarsson's touch brought the all-important goal, but manager Steve Coppell said: "He got a bang on the head and he suffers from migraine occasionally.

"He was very aware of a blind spot on his left side, and it was brave of him to continue and make some more terrific headers later. He didn't see the goal go in. He asked James Harper 'Where did it go?' - but I'm delighted with the three points."

He added: "Now the challenge is to maintain our good start. It will be a constant challenge, because pretty soon everybody will know about us in this division.

"We played well, but City made it tough for us. Our other centre-half Ibrahama Sonko was terrific too. It gives the team confidence to see him clearing with headers and putting his foot in.

"Not playing for 16 days was a big problem. You need people together to prepare for games, but we had several away on international duty.

"Still we will take three points whatever way we can. We've still got the same spirit here as we did when winning the Championship last season, and it can take us a long way."
