Jan out to be tour de force

14 April 2012

Jan Ulrich claims he is fitter than ever and ready for another epic duel with Lance Armstrong in the Tour de France, which begins on Saturday.

The 30-year-old German cyclist, with five second-place finishes and one win in the Tour, sets off on Saturday to erase painful memories as the perennial nearly man to the five-time American champion.

Ullrich said: "I don't have many chances left. This race will probably decide if I'm to be remembered as a gifted talent who made life hard on himself, or a sloppy genius who didn't understand how to convert his extraordinary talent into memorable triumphs."

The T-Mobile team captain, Tour champion in 1997, recently won the Tour of Switzerland and added: "It's important that someone shows Lance that there's someone better."
