Jeffers ready to help Arsenal

Francis Jeffers, the £8 million striker who has made only four Premiership appearances for Arsenal, could be fit for the two weeks which may decide the title.

The 20-year-old striker made his comeback in the reserves last night after a serious ankle injury.

Manager Arsene Wenger watched as Jeffers played for an hour in the 2-1 win over West Ham reserves at Barnet.

He scored, missed a penalty and emerged unscathed from his first action for three months

Arsenal face title rivals Newcastle tonight in the first of five potentially decisive games in 15 days. Jeffers will not play at Highbury this evening but has scheduled another reserve game this week and is anxious to return to the first team soon.

He said: "We have a lot of games coming up before and after Christmas. I hope I will be able to be involved. I just want to show everyone what I can do.

"My ankle is feeling good. My fitness levels are not what I hoped for at the moment but they will get there with games."

Wenger bought Jeffers from Everton in the summer because he felt he needed "a fox in the box."
