Jessica Ennis-Hill: It’s like I’m starting again

Jessica Ennis-Hill has tried to dampen expectations as she makes her competitive return after nearly two years out from the sport.

Ennis-Hill will mark her first track outing since the 2013 Anniversary Games in a star-studded 100 metre hurdles field against world champion Brianna Rollins and British record holder Tiffany Porter at the Great CityGames in Manchester tomorrow.

“I’ve got to face these sorts of athletes at some point anyway, so why not now,” said the Olympic champion (right). “I feel like I’m at the beginning of my career again, I’m back down here. In London I was there at the top, I have to work back up.”

Training has been something of a balancing act as a new mum but also with an Achilles problem that has curtailed many of her sessions in recent weeks.

But tomorrow’s event will give her a chance to test where she is ahead of her first heptathlon since London 2012 in Gotzis at the end of this month.

Ennis-Hill knows that hopes will be high because of her past glories but warned: “This year is just about coming back. I just want to get back into the swing of competing.”
