Jones extends Catalans stay

12 April 2012

New Zealand Test scrum-half Stacey Jones has signed a new 12-month deal with Catalans Dragons.

The 30-year-old, one of the legends of the modern game, was out of contract at the end of this season and his decision to stay for a third year is a major boost for the French club as they seek to establish firm roots in Super League.

"I am very happy to be Catalan in 2008 because it will be a crucial season for the future of the club," he said. "My family is very happy in Perpignan, the supporters are great and remind me of those of Auckland."

Jones has led the Dragons in their first two seasons in Super League after spending more than a decade with Auckland Warriors and has been a pivotal figure in their marked improvement this year after they finished 2006 with the wooden spoon.

Jones added: "I love working with (coach) Mick Potter and really there was no reason for me not remain one more year in France.

"We have quite a lot of injured players this season but I am confident that, when we have our players back, we will make the play-offs."

Christophe Lévy, Catalans general manager, said: "Stacey Jones is the best scrum-half in the world and his decision to stay is further proof of the vitality of our club and our capacity to attract and keep the best players in the world.

"Stacey was never disappointed by our club and the extension of the contract until 2008 is evidence that everybody trusts our adventure."

The club claim the retention of Jones is the first step in their plans to bolster the squad for 2008, and they plan to announce new signings in the near future.
