Jones saga drags on

14 April 2012

The Simon Jones saga has stretched into another day with England captain Michael Vaughan still waiting to learn if and when the Glamorgan fast bowler will make it to Jamaica for the start of the West Indies tour.

Yesterday, coach Duncan Fletcher spoke optimistically about having Jones on board in Jamaica by tonight following positive news about the paceman's shin injury.

But, just a few hours later, that possibility disappeared because the results of another scan would not be available in time for Jones to catch today's flight to Kingston.

Having apparently overcome a career-threatening knee injury, the 25-year-old is now suffering from shin soreness as a result of having bowled in India on the A tour.

It is a problem Jones has had before and both he and England need to be certain there is no new bone damage. Even assuming Jones flies out this weekend he now seems unlikely to play in the opening warm-up game, against a Jamaica XI, which starts on Monday.

But, having bowled in India, he should be more match fit. England have a second threeday fixture before Thursday week's First Test in Jamaica.

CELTIC skipper Paul Lambert claims the top sides left in the UEFA Cup will all be hoping to avoid the Scottish champions-elect in the fourth round.

The Glasgow giants stayed on course for a second successive final appearance witha 3-0 win over Czech side Teplice in the third round, first leg, thanks to two goals from Henrik Larsson and one by Chris Sutton.

Lambert said: "There's a long way to go - just look at the teams that are still involved in the tournament.

"But we are very strong and we will have a reputation."
