Jonny Wilkinson's looking foot perfect as he helps beat Saracens

13 April 2012

JONNY WILKINSON ended Saracens' unbeaten start to the season when scoring 16 points for Toulon in their 31-23 Amlin Challenge Cup victory last night to confirm he is on course to reclaim the England No10 jersey, writes Chris Jones.

Wilkinson, who hopes to return for the autumn internationals, described his move from Newcastle as "a new beginning" and his kicking looked as good as ever as he scored four penalties and two conversions in a match that puts Toulon in control of the pool.

Sarries, the Premiership leaders, must now win all of their remaining matches - including an away trip to Castres - and hope Toulon slip up to have any chance of making the knock-out stages.

A late Richard Haughton try following a close-range effort from Wikus Van Heerden ensured Sarries were competitive but they left it too late to reveal their attacking potential. Toulon centre Gabi Lovobalavu scored two tries and their points were completed by a try from England centre Tom May.

Wilkinson, who was watched by England backs coach Brian Smith and defence coach Mike Ford, said: "It's great to be part of what we are building here."
