Kanoute's fear after riot

Fredi Kanoute will return to training today after assuring Tottenham that he is "safe and well"

Mali fans threatened to kill the striker when their side conceded two late goals in a 2006 World Cup qualifier against Togo on Sunday.

Kanoute said: "I was very frightened. At no stage did I actually think I would die but it was a seriously dangerous situation for all of us, the worst I've had to deal with in my entire career.

"I don't think I did anything to deserve being singled out. I had missed a couple of chances but those were made by me. I didn't miss any easy opportunities to score.

"When the fans rushed on, we fled to the dressing room. We locked ourselves in there for two or three hours before being allowed to leave the stadium."

The France-born player, who qualifies for Mali through his parents, is now rethinking his international career.

He said: "I don't know if I will play for Mali again. I have my family to think about."
