Katarina claims first big scalp

Fifth-seed Kim Clijsters suffered a surprise defeat at the hands of Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik in the second round of the JPMorgan Chase Open in Los Angeles.

Srebotnik, ranked 37 placed her Belgian opponent, won 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 and said: "I've had some close matches with some top players but I was never able to win one."

Second seed Jennifer Capriati, playing in the event for the first time, was too strong for Switzerland's Emanuelle Gagliardi, winning 6-1, 6-2.

Third-seed and defending champion Lindsay Davenport was given a scare by Russian wild card Elena Bovina before going through 6-2, 6-7, 6-3.
