Jason Kenny will ride for Track Cycling World Championships gold in Apeldoorn, Holland after defeating Great Britain team-mate Sir Chris Hoy in the men's sprint semi-final.

British room-mates Hoy and Kenny celebrated their birthdays on Wednesday's opening day of the championships, the Scot turning 35 and Kenny 23.

Kenny won the first bout after catching Hoy out of position early on the final lap. Hoy went in front on the penultimate lap of the second contest and Kenny came round the outside to pip his team-mate on the line and progress.

Kenny will meet Gregory Bauge in the final, with Hoy racing Mickael Bourgain, also of France, for bronze.

Bauge is looking for a hat-trick of sprint world titles having succeeded Hoy as champion in 2009 and retained his title in Copenhagen 12 months ago.

Victoria Pendleton progressed to the best-of-three quarter-finals in the women's event, but her team-mates Becky James and Jessica Varnish were eliminated in the second-round repechage.

Pendleton is seeking a fifth-straight world title in the event and a sixth in seven years.
