Keothavong falls short

12 April 2012

Anne Keothavong narrowly missed out on reaching her first WTA final after Elena Vesina overcame the British number one 6-7 (3/7) 6-1 7-5 at the ASB Classic in Auckland.

Keothavong fought back from 5-3 down to take the first set on a tie-break after producing a scorching backhand that proved too good for her Russian opponent. However, Vesina hit back in style, winning the next 6-1 in 39 minutes, before edging a tight third set.

Vesina will face top seed Elena Dementieva in the final after the world number four inflicted a 6-2 6-2 defeat on last year's runner-up Aravane Rezai.
