Key eyes 'unbelievable job'

12 April 2012

Robert Key has staked his claim to be England captain for the ICC World Twenty20 after Andrew Strauss was left out of the squad for the tournament in June.

Key, whose Kent team were beaten finalists in last summer's domestic Twenty20 Cup, sees himself as one of several plausible candidates to lead the country in cricket's shortest format.

"I suppose if you look at the squad there is a few of us with captaincy experience, but there are a few things to put right before we get to that," he told Sky Sports News. "We need to get a coach in and then see who's in the final 15. It would be an unbelievable job (to be captain) - but there are a few who could do it."

Strauss will carry on leading the Test and one-day side this summer but not for the event England host in two months' time, with Dimitri Mascarenhas and Andrew Flintoff also among the players in the running to step in.

The possibility of Flintoff being captain again will get England fans excited, after the 31-year-old was stripped of the vice-captaincy in 2007 following the infamous 'Fredalo' incident.

"There are loads of options for us to go down, Andrew is one of them," said England selector Geoff Miller.

"We will certainly discuss it."
