Khan so close to making history

13 April 2012

Simon Khan narrowly missed out on golf history today as the European Tour's first sub-60 round eluded him at the Celtic Manor Wales Open.

Khan carded seven birdies and an eagle in his first nine holes of the second round.

The 31-year-old Englishman's outward half of 27 equalled the record for the lowest nine holes in a tour event and left him needing to pick up four more shots to card a magical 59. He picked up further birdies at the 11th and 17th but could only par the long 18th.

Teeing up four off the lead, he wiped out that deficit with birdies on the first four holes.

He eagled the fifth, another birdie came on the sixth before a par on the seventh was followed by two more birdies, making him only the third player to complete nine holes in nine under.

Khan's 14-under halfway total of 130 put him two shots clear of Paul Casey and three ahead of Colin Montgomerie.
