Lampard's ref plea

Frankly speaking: Lampard says ‘no’ to video replays
13 April 2012

Frank Lampard today urged officials to use more common sense after having his red card against Liverpool overturned but rejected calls for the introduction of video technology, writes Simon Johnson.

The midfielder will now play against Hull after Mike Riley admitted he got his decision to dismiss Lampard for a challenge on Xabi Alonso wrong.

Lampard said: "It was obviously a mistake, we all make mistakes. Footballers make mistakes just as much as anyone - and the referee did.

"All I think it needs is the referees to be given time to consult the other officials. There are four of them now so they're getting different angles on it."

Lampard also believes talk of turning to television technology to prevent future mistakes is over the top.

He added: "I don't agree with that. It's very difficult to keep stopping the game for any foul, you open up the door to looking at every single foul that happens and that's not good."
