Laura Davies has set her sights on a 34th year on the LPGA Tour after recording her best finish since 2007.

The 54-year-old finished joint-second at the Founders Cup in Arizona on Sunday on 14 under, five shots behind winner Inbee Park, of South Korea.

“At 54, I still feel like I can hit the ball as well as most of the really good players,” she said. “I know I’ve been playing well and I haven’t had the results to reflect that.

“Now people might stop asking me when I’m going to retire — that’s the best thing about it. I can just go and play and see if I can get a few more top-10 finishes this year. I might even have a chance of winning again.”

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy has now usurped Tiger Woods as the Masters favourite following the Northern Irishman’s first victory in 18 months, winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

McIlroy had what he called “the perfect round”, a 64 which consisted of eight birdies and not a single dropped shot. He is bidding to complete the career Grand Slam at the Masters and said: “I’m so happy to be back in the winner’s circle again.”
