Laurie will make Games debut at 60

13 April 2012

Showjumper Laurie Lever will make his Olympic debut next month at the age of 60.

The Australian - thought to be the oldest first-timer at the Games - has competed in international events for decades but said it was only in recent years he had found a horse good enough for the Olympics.

"It's been amazing the number of people who have come up to me and said 'Good on you Laurie, there's hope for us yet,'" said Lever, who will ride nine-year-old gelding Ashleigh Drossel Dan.

"But nowadays we are a fitter generation and you don't have to be as fit as other athletes for show jumping. Experience is important."

However, he is not the oldest horse rider at the Games. Japan's Hiroshi Hoketsu is returning to the Olympics after a 44-year break at the age of 67.
