Law leads Lancashire reply

14 April 2012

Stuart Law made up for his rare double failure last time out with an unbeaten hundred to keep Lancashire competitive in their top-of-the-table match against Sussex in Division One of the Liverpool Victoria County Championship.

The Australian-born run machine managed no runs for twice out in three balls at Trent Bridge last week - but this time he made 102 not out as his team replied to 439 with 246 for four by stumps on day two at Hove.

Lancashire needed Law back in the groove too, after Matt Prior (112) and Robin Martin-Jenkins had augmented their sixth-wicket stand to the tune of 174 for Sussex - and then Jason Lewry (three for 35) saw off both openers as the visitors replied.

The fightback was not long delayed, Law hooking up with young wicketkeeper Gareth Cross (61no) in an unbroken stand of 101 - and closing another hard-fought day with 14 fours and one six to his name from 154 balls faced.

The rain-affected match between Durham and champions Nottinghamshire at the Riverside suffered a washout on Wednesday - but is still long odds-on for a positive result on Friday after 25 wickets fell on the penultimate day.

The hosts turned 145 for six into 195 all out as Charlie Shreck finished with six for 67 and Callum Thorp made an unbeaten 68 after losing his overnight partner Phil Mustard (81).

Notts' reply lasted only 32.3 overs, Graham Onions taking four for 37 to help hustle the visitors out for 139 - but Durham were soon in trouble themselves second time round, Shreck (four for 64) again their scourge.

Even after a ninth-wicket stand of 68 between Neil Killeen and Onions, the home side were bowled out for 157. Notts were therefore left needing 214 to win - but in seven overs of batting they were soon one wicket down on the way to 17 without further loss.

Kent and Hampshire were also held up by the weather on the second morning - but in the two sessions possible at Canterbury John Crawley (113no) wrested the initiative for the visitors, whose response to 285 all out was worth 171 for two by stumps.

Crawley has hit 19 fours in his 177-ball innings so far.
