Lee Westwood back for Ryder Cup, says Monty

13 April 2012

Lee Westwood is unlikely to play before the Ryder Cup but skipper Colin Montgomerie has no doubts the world No3 will be in his team at Celtic Manor.

Europe's top player is recovering from a torn calf muscle which prevented him playing in the final Major of the season, the US PGA Championship at Whistling Straits.

Montgomerie said today: "I phoned Lee on Sunday. Whether he'll play any competitive golf before the Ryder Cup is in doubt, but he'll be hitting balls a week ahead of schedule, which is two weeks before the Ryder Cup [starting on 1 October].

"That gives me great heart. So you can damn well guarantee that Lee Westwood will be playing at Celtic Manor."
