Lewis gets England call

14 April 2012

Jon Lewis is the only uncapped player to be named in England's squads for this week's second npower Test against Bangladesh and the forthcoming one-day challenges announced today

The Gloucestershire seamer, who was called into the squad for England's emphatic innings and 261 runs opening Test triumph at Lord's but failed to make the starting line-up, was included again today in a 12-man squad to face Bangladesh again in the next Test starting on Friday at Chester-le-Street.

Only Ashley Giles, who has again been ruled out with a hip injury, is missing from the squad which triumphed so comprehensively at Lord's with Graham Thorpe retained to put him in sight of his 100th Test later this week.

The one-day squad, who will compete in England's first ever Twenty20 international against Australia at the Rosebowl on June 13 and the NatWest Triangular series, was a more complicated consideration for the selectors.

Giles is included even though his fitness remains in doubt while other players like Glamorgan seamer Alex Wharf - ruled out of contention with a side strain - may be included when England name a squad for the three-match NatWest challenge against Australia which starts at Headingley on July 7.

"We've not included Ashley in the Test squad for Durham but we're hopeful that he will recover from injury and be available for the NatWest Series," explained England and Wales Cricket Board chairman of selectors David Graveney today.

"Alex Wharf was not considered for the one-day squad and we hope he will regain fitness in time to be considered for selection for the NatWest Challenge."

Wharf's absence has opened up an opportunity for Lewis to make his international debut, possibly in both formats of the game, during the next couple of weeks as England come face-to-face against Australia for the first time this summer.

Glamorgan seamer Simon Jones, the pick of England's attack during their Lord's Test triumph, has also been included in the one-day squad after playing his first two matches in the limited overs format of the game against Zimbabwe last December.

"Jon Lewis had an excellent A tour, continues to perform consistently for Gloucestershire in both forms of the game and fully merits a place in both Test and one-day squads," said Graveney.

"He is keen to represent his country and I'm sure that he will be ready to take full advantage of any opportunities that come his way.

"Simon Jones bowled impressively during the first Test and he has also put in some impressive performances for Glamorgan in one-day cricket this season.

This is a good chance for him to show he can hold down a place in both international squads."
