Lippi hits low as Lady Luck deserts Juve

14 April 2012

Juventus coach Marcello Lippi made no effort to hide his disappointment after the Italians suffered a surprise 1-0 home defeat by Deportivo La Coruna.

"It's a bitter feeling," he said. "I am very sad to go out of the Champions League, especially as we are used to going all the way. What really saddens me is that we couldn't give ourselves a real chance, with our full compliment of players."

Juventus were without French striker David Trezeguet, midfielders Igor Tudor, Enzo Maresca and Antonio Conte and defenders Mark Iuliano and Gianluca Zambrotta.

"You need a bit of luck in that sort of situation but we lost Del Piero early on and then gave away a disgraceful goal," Lippi added.

Deportivo coach Javier Irureta's surprise decision to play Walter Pandiani ahead of Diego Tristan paid off handsomely as the Uruguayan striker scored the goal to give the Spanish club a 2-0 winning aggregate.

This was Juve's first home defeat in almost 42 years against Spanish opposition, ending a run of 20 games unbeaten against teams from La Liga.

French side Lyon reached the last eight for the first time, also winning 1-0 against Real Sociedad.

Brazilian midfielder Juninho scored the 77th-minute goal to clinch a 2-0 aggregate win and take them into Friday's quarter-final draw.
