Despite bringing an end to their 30-year wait for a Premier League title this season, Liverpool are facing up to a summer of uncertainty in the transfer market.

With the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic still yet to be fully understood, owners Fenway Sports Group are set to take a cautious approach to building on the club's recent success.

As Jurgen Klopp explained: "A few weeks ago nobody knew if we could play Champions League next season again. Can you count on the money of the Champions League and how much will it be?

"That is all uncertain and that is what we consider because we are not only responsible for the success of the club, we are responsible for all the people at the club and that means everyone who is working here. That is what we try to do.

“As long as we don’t know exactly about things, we have to wait."

Liverpool have already allowed both Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne to depart at the end of their contracts, and sanctioned the sale of Dejan Lovren to Zenit St Petersburg for £11m.

Xherdan Shaqiri is expected to follow that trio out of the door in the event of an acceptable offer being received.

With youngster Neco Williams, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott ready to feature more regularly next term, only Lovren's departure is currently considered significant enough to warrant a replacement.

As such, the Reds are now in the market for a centre-back willing to initially accept a back-up role.

Links with Thiago Alcantara continue to surface, but a move for the Bayern Munich midfielder is currently rated as unlikely unless one of Klopp's current midfield options were to leave.

However, that outcome cannot be fully ruled out as yet with Gini Wijnaldum's contract talks still dragging on.
