Banned: Luis Suarez

Luis Suarez is unique and should be kept by Liverpool despite being banned for biting, according to the club's former director of football Damien Comolli.

Uruguay forward Suarez was banned for nine international matches and from all football-related activity for four months after FIFA found him guilty of biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini last Tuesday.

Suarez has since denied the allegations – saying he lost his balance and hit his face against Chiellini – but with Liverpool yet to formally comment on his future at the club, the 27-year-old is unsure of what lies ahead.

But for Damien Comolli, the former director of football at Anfield who was involved in bringing Suarez to Liverpool, the striker is unique and should not be sold.

Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, Comolli said: “Who do you replace him with? There is nobody like him around.

“If there was a buying club and they felt Liverpool would sell, they will take advantage and try to drive the price down.”

Comolli’s views are similar to those of Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish, who expects the Merseyside club to stick with Suarez despite the controversy.
