Queensland opened the scoring in the third minute when winger Greg Inglis took a Johnathan Thurston cross-field kick in the left corner.

Thurston converted from near the sideline to give the home side a 6-0 lead.

Seven minutes later, New South Wales five-eighth Braith Anasta attracted two defenders close to Queensland's line and off-loaded to second-rower Nathan Hindmarsh, who barged his way over the line. Jamie Lyon converted, tying the game 6-6.

It was all New South Wales for the remainder of the first half. In the 20th minute, New South Wales center Matt Cooper scored a try after the ball passed through the hands of Jarrod Mullen and Andrew Ryan.

After a Lyon penalty goal with three minutes left, rookie winger Jarryd Hayne scooped up a Queensland kick, brushed off Justin Hodges and kicked ahead, beating Hodges in a race to the ball to score right on halftime.

Inglis scored in the left corner for his second try 10 minutes into the second half and Thurston again converted from a difficult angle to pull Queensland to within 18-12.

The Maroons tied the match with 20 minutes left when Steve Price scored after a New South Wales turnover and man-of-the-match Thurston kicked the conversion.

Lockyer scored the winning try after the 19-year-old Hayne's attempted pass to a teammate deflected to the Queensland captain Darren Lockyer, who ran untouched into the goal area.

"At halftime our heads were down and we had blown some opportunities," said Lockyer. "But we just hung in there."

Thurston added his fourth conversion of the night, then kicked a single-point field goal with 12 minutes left to put the Maroons up by more than a converted try.
