London 2017: Zharnel Hughes faces moment of truth as selectors meet

Zharnel Hughes knows his hopes of competing at the World Championships hang by a thread when selectors meet on Monday.

Returning to the Anniversary Games, which he was forced to watch from the stands last year due to injury, the outcome did not make for much better reading.

The knee injury has gone but Hughes struggled in the 200m, finishing fifth in a time of 20.33sec.

For the 21-year-old and occasional trainer partner of Usain Bolt, it had been the perfect opportunity to show the selectors that he deserved the nod for London 2017 for the remaining wildcard pick.

His rival for that spot, Adam Gemili, was missing through injury and Hughes knows he has an anxious wait to find out if he’ll make the team - with the final selectors’ meeting on July 24.

"I need to figure out what went wrong," said Hughes. "My body feels good but I need to get sharp now. Everything was fine so I don’t know what happened."

Hughes’ girlfriend Dina Asher-Smith also faces a nail-biting few days as she continues her return from a broken foot and was nowhere near her best as she failed to make the 100m final.

She said: "Obviously I would have liked to have gone a lot faster but I’m happy to have come through it healthy and I can go quicker."
