London has been topped as the world’s sporting capital for the second straight year by New York.

London was dethroned last year after a lengthy spell at No1 in the annual BCW ranking and failed to return to the top spot as the rankings for 2021 were unveiled on Thursday.

BCW said the city remains in a strong second place at the start of the year despite a sporting calendar in 2020 heavily impacted by the Covid pandemic with the likes of Wimbledon, the Major League Baseball and NFL games cancelled during the course of the year.

In the latest list, Los Angeles is in third place, Barcelona in fourth and Paris rounds off the top five.

Of other British cities, Manchester comes in at seventh place with Glasgow in 26, with Birmingham set to enter the top 50 for next year.

Unveiling the list for 2021, BCW managing director Lars Haue-Pedersen said: “In a year of postponement, rescheduling, relocation and modifications for sporting events, it is more interesting than ever to discover the extent to which cities are associated with sport.”
