LuaLua may return to Newcastle

13 April 2012

Lomana LuaLua could yet play again for Newcastle this season after the Magpies reached an agreement with Portsmouth to recall him from his loan spell at Fratton Park.

The two clubs have thrashed out a deal and it is understood that United are waiting for a decision from the 23-year-old Democratic Republic of Congo striker as they attempt to contend with their injury crisis.

LuaLua has proved a central figure in Pompey's successful battle for Barclaycard Premiership survival, playing the full 90 minutes in last night's 1-1 draw with champions Arsenal and having contributed three goals to their cause, one of them a late equaliser against the Magpies.

He clinched his temporary move to the south coast after failing to win a regular place at St James' Park, and has spoken of his desire to make it permanent.

However, Craig Bellamy's hamstring injury, coupled with the fact that both Alan Shearer and Shola Ameobi are one booking away from European bans heading into tomorrow night's UEFA Cup semi-final, second leg clash with Marseille, have left Sir Bobby Robson short.

Loan signing Michael Bridges is gradually building up his match fitness, while 20-year-old Michael Chopra is still short of senior experience, and LuaLua may just get the chance he has craved for so long.
