Maguire expects Warriors to respond

Wigan coach Michael Maguire insists his side will learn from their heavy defeat against Warrington as the Engage Super League champions' unbeaten start to the season came to an abrupt end.

The Warriors were outclassed in every department as the Wolves ran out 24-6 winners to extend their lead at the top of the Super League ladder. Joel Monaghan will get most of the headlines with his two tries but special mentions have to be handed out to the likes of Lee Briers, Adrian Morley and Brett Hodgson as they never allowed the Warriors to gain any momentum.

A disappointed Maguire said: "It was a tough old night for the boys unfortunately and we probably went away from what we are capable of doing throughout the game but full credit to Warrington they turned up and attacked and defended very well tonight. They put us off our game but we will learn a lot from that one."

The only positive Maguire could take was the return of half-back Brett Finch who managed over an hour following his comeback from neck surgery.

"He was a bit rusty at times with it being his first game," Maguire added. "He put his hand up and he is going to be a better player after that. It was a tough game to be thrown into when we are a bit short in the halves but it's a great run for him and he knows what is expected in Super League now."

Warrington head coach Tony Smith was obviously delighted to get one over on the champions but believes there is still a lot of improvement left in his hungry Wolves.

"It was a good performance, we are trying to improve all the time but there are some aspects of our game we want to improve on," he said.

"It wasn't all our own way. Wigan threw a fair bit at us and we managed to keep them out.

"We were there in numbers and willing to make sure they didn't get the ball down except for their try off a kick.

"I am delighted with that but there are some areas we need to improve on but at the same time i thought our attack was pretty good."
