Malik to skipper Pakistan

Shoaib Malik

Shoaib Malik has been named as Pakistan captain for Friday's Twenty20 international against Australia.

Malik will take over from Shahid Afridi, who has been banned for two T20 clashes after being found guilty of ball tampering during the fifth one-day international defeat by Australia in Perth.

The Pakistan Cricket Board have moved quickly to fill the void, with Malik reclaiming the role he once had.

He was first appointed skipper in May 2007 after the World Cup and led Pakistan in three Tests and 36 ODIs before handing over the reins to Younus Khan in early 2009.

Malik will be the third captain on the tour, after Mohammad Yousuf and Afridi. Yousuf, the team's Test captain, is not part of the Twenty20 squad.

If the captaincy merry-go-round was not disrupting enough, chief selector Iqbal Qasim has also announced his resignation.

Pakistan lost all three Tests and all five one-day matches against Australia.

"After the clean sweep in the Tests as well as the one-day series, I don't think it is my moral duty to remain the chief selector," Qasim said.

"I am very disappointed, like millions of Pakistanis. As I am responsible for the selection of the team, I quit from my post.

"The selection committee, which I headed, did its best to select the best possible team for the Tests as well as for the one-day matches, but they did not live up to the expectations of the fans who are badly hurt."
