Malky Mackay's era at Watford ends with draw at Bristol City

Malky Mackay praised his Watford players after his final game as caretaker manager, writes Ben Hunt.

The former defender was placed in temporary charge following Aidy Boothroyd's departure earlier this month but ex-Chelsea reserve-team boss Brendan Rodgers takes on the role on a permanent basis today, looking to steer the club clear from relegation.

Under Mackay, Watford took seven points from a possible 15 thanks to last night's draw and he said he enjoyed his stint in charge.

"Credit to the boys," said Mackay. "They've shown courage and gone out and passed the ball well in the last few weeks and scored two or three really good goals.

"They're playing with a bit of creativity and they are beginning to look good going forward. They have shown real togetherness and I am delighted they are playing for each other. It's been an honour to be in charge."

Nicky Maynard put City in front but Tommy Smith equalised when he ran on to Jon Harley's pass and slotted the ball beyond Adriano Basso.

Watford defender Darren Ward, on loan from Wolves, was taken to hospital amid fears he had fractured a cheekbone following a challenge with Dele Adebola.

The incident angered Mackay, who said: "I made my feelings known to the referee. After the game the referee has apologised and said he made a mistake."
