Maloney set to sell 'that suit'

13 April 2012

The most famous suit in British sport is to go under the hammer this weekend.

Boxing manager Frank Maloney, who was a major influence in the transformation of London?s Lennox Lewis from Olympic gold medallist to undisputed heavyweight champion of the world, is to auction the ?lucky? suit that he wore in the ring while helping Lewis celebrate nine world championship victories.

Their relationship has soured since Lewis lost his World Boxing Council and International Boxing Federation titles to America?s Hasim Rahman earlier this year.

And Maloney has said the suit ? a red, white and blue two-piece tailored from Union flags ? ?has lost it?s karma?.

Maloney admits he still has no idea whether he will be in Lewis?s corner for the rematch with Rahman in Las Vegas on 17 November.

?It is a question of ?if ? I am still involved with Lennox,? he said. ?I have heard nothing about it.?

A split appears inevitable. Lewis has already set up a training camp without his manager and Maloney will assist Russian light- middleweight Roman Karmazin in a forthcoming clash with Oscar de la Hoya.

All proceeds from Maloney?s suit sale will go to a fund set up for former world featherweight champion Paul Ingle, who underwent emergency brain surgery following a defeat against South Africa?s Mbulelo Botile last December. The suit will be auctioned at a gala dinner to be held in Ingle?s honour in Scarborough on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the BBC, who broadcast Lewis?s defeat against Hasim Rahman in April, have pulled out of negotiations for the rematch in Las Vegas.
