The Masters golf tournament is set to be played in November this year, after organisers announced new dates for all three US-based majors.

Golf’s most famous tournament was originally due to take place this week, but was postponed because of the coronavirus outbreak. Usually the first major of the year, the Augusta National showpiece will now come last, with organisers aiming for the competition to take place from November 9-15, providing the pandemic has subsided.

The PGA Championship has been moved to August 3-9, and will be followed by the US Open, to be held at Winged Foot Golf Club from September 17-20.

The Open Championship, the only major held outside the US, was cancelled outright on Monday and will not be played at all this year.

A statement from Fred Ridley, Chairman of Augusta National Golf Club, confirmed that it would extend invitations to players who would have qualified for the original springtime tournament.

“We hope the anticipation of staging the Masters Tournament in the fall brings a moment of joy to the Augusta community and all those who love the sport,” Riley said.

The Augusta National Women’s Amateur, which debuted last year and was scheduled to be played in the week before The Masters, has been cancelled.
