Matterson hints at quitting Tigers

12 April 2012

Castleford coach Terry Matterson hinted on Saturday night that he is set to quit the West Yorkshire club in the wake of their relegation from Super League.

The Tigers will return to National League One following their 29-17 defeat at neighbours Wakefield and, although the club intend to keep a full-time squad, Matterson looks likely to return to Australia.

"My deal is a Super League deal," he said. "I never thought about it for one minute but now I'm going to have to deal with the future. But I'll wake up on Sunday and deal with that. I consider myself a Super League coach. I've never thought of coaching National League One. That's how I feel at the moment. I've come a long way to coach Super League."

Matterson, 38, a former captain of London Broncos, quit his job as Canberra assistant last November to take up a two-year contract with the newly-promoted Tigers.

They won nine matches and finished the season with 19 points, six more than the previous best accumulated by a relegated side and three more than Catalans Dragons but French club are safe from the drop for the next two seasons.
