McDowell won't be returning a favour

Ryder Cup star Darren Clarke is in for a disappointment tomorrow if he is hoping for the return of a favour from rookie golf sensation Graeme McDowell.

Clarke lent McDowell the Odyssey putter which the 23-year-old from Northern Ireland used as his principle weapon to win the Scandinavian Masters in Stockholm on Sunday.

Single putts on 12 greens in the final round helped secure victory and a first prize of £200,000 for McDowell in only his fourth tournament as a professional.

But ahead of meeting up with Clarke in the Wales Open at Celtic Manor tomorrow he warned: "There is no way in the world that Darren is getting that putter back!"

McDowell added: "Darren has been an inspiration. Last week he text-messaged me every night telling me to stay in the present and have the belief to win. He also called me on Saturday before the final round. It is nice that you have someone of Darren's stature behind you."
