McGeechan knows what's needed

Ian McGeechan admitted Wasps will probably need a bonus-point victory over Castres next week to be guaranteed a place in the Heineken Cup quarter-finals.

Wasps kept their ambitions alive with a 19-12 victory over Leinster at Twickenham - but the Irish province left with a bonus point which could prove crucial in the final shake-up.

The Wasps director of rugby said: "It is more realistic to say five points gives us the best chance of winning the group - but I would hate to go for five points and get none because you have to look across the pools.

"Our intention is to win the pool - but we have to go to Castres and win first and foremost and see what happens in Dublin."

Wasps must earn a better result in Castres next weekend than Leinster manage at home to Edinburgh in order to win Pool Two.

Otherwise, they will be left hoping they have done enough to qualify as one of two best runners-up.

Wasps had the opportunity to deny Leinster a losing bonus after earning a late penalty - but captain Phil Vickery opted to go for the posts and cement the victory instead of push for a try.

Wasps had seen a 16-6 lead - earned with Serge Betsen's first-half try and 11 points from Danny Cipriani - eroded after the game went to uncontested scrums three minutes before the interval.

McGeechan understood why Vickery made the call for Dave Walder, on as a late replacement for Cipriani, to slot the three points.

"The decision was made on the field. We had been talking about winning first and there is another week's competition to go yet," said McGeechan.
